Kids and Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care for children is something that I feel strongly about for so many reasons. For one, I love kids. I always have. Watching a little individual with their own personality, growing and learning, is amazing to me. Also, I am the type of person who loves quick results, I go to the gym once and I should have a 6 pack, right? When delivering chiropractic care to children it is typical that they see results faster than adults. To me this makes sense, adults typically have a problem that has been going on over time, before actually doing something about it, and if something has been present for awhile, it is going to take longer to correct. Children are also growing and adapting at rapid rates, so it is typical for them to heal faster.

One thing parents always ask is, "is chiropractic care safe for my kids." Obviously this is a concern for any parent, they want to keep their children safe and harm free. Honestly, if chiropractic was going to harm children, this is a profession I would have never gotten into. If I felt adjusting my very own niece, or other pediatric patient was going to cause any harm I would not lay a finger on them. Many studies have been done and prove that the chance of any adverse effects when treating children with chiropractic care is extremely low, less than 1%. The adverse effects that can come with antibiotics or drugs, offer a much higher risk. With that being said, I want to be clear. I am not throwing antibiotics or drugs under the bus at all, I believe that there is a time and a place. I am only comparing the safety and risks. When treating children chiropractors use a very low force, the adjustments are extremely gentle.

Many people are unaware of just what chiropractic care can do for their children. Chiropractic can be very helpful with colicky babies, torticollis, sleep issues, and even nursing dysfunction. When in the womb babies can be stuck in the same position, potentially for several months. As an adult I am sure you can imagine how you would feel being stuck in the same position for a couple of days, let alone a couple of months! When treating children it is my goal to help restore motion in the joints, and balance in the tissues. Taking the tension off of their little bodies can help to allow for optimal growth and function.

As a chiropractor I know the importance of the nervous system. Your brain controls everything in your entire body, it tells your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe, and your food to digest. The way that your brain communicates with your body is through your nervous system. If there is just one little misalignment in your spine it can interfere with function, and the communication between the brain and the rest of your body. Just as adults have brains and nerves, children do too, so of course if we are treating adults we should also be treating children, we just modify how we do it.

I feel very strongly about the quote "It is better to raise healthy children, than to fix injured adults." Treating patients at a young age can help prevent bigger issues down the road. I feel so strongly about treating children that I offer a Kids Day, the first Wednesday of every month in my clinic!
